Today was the first fabulous frost of winter! Grim news for some but I couldn't help but grin as I pulled my woolly hat down over my ears against the chill pinch of the changing season. How fresh and clear and bright the day has been and how good the garden has looked even at the cusp of hibernation. And still we harvest. Gingerly from ladders plucking the hard fruits of the 'Quilter' pear ready to store for the winter larder.
At this time, the common ivy Hedera helix is a valuable source of nectar for bees and butterflies to stock up before 'the big winter sleep'. One particular bush outside the garden office was absolutely teeming with a frenzy of hungry insects, gorging in the warm winter sun. Days such as this, are worth treasuring as the year draws to an end.
