Soil Analysis - Part 1

To an organic gardener, the soil is the most important aspect of the garden. If the soil is managed and nurtured, the theory is the crops themselves suffer less from cultural problems, pests and disease. With this in mind, it is good practice to test the soil for the nutritional elements every year to ensure you replace what is lost when growing crops annually. Today our students got their hands dirty and learnt what type of soil we grow in here, at Bawdsey, and collected samples from each plot in preparation for tests to establish levels of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
