With the weather being so unreliable at present, we had everything crossed that it would be dry enough overhead to do some practical activities in the garden with our students. Fortunately – the rain held off until the afternoon, and despite being exceptionally sticky underfoot (even on our light soil), all students participated in some good old fashioned hand weeding. It was quite a slick system with buckets and wheelbarrows going backwards and forwards to banish all those numerous weed seeds which would end up in the soil if strimmed and turned in. It’s a proper organic method and for the most part, seemed to be enjoyed by all! We even had the new Field Studies Manager – Caroline Fowler pitching in to give us a hand!
groups 2 and 3 had good weather this week and so were able to start handweeding the plots in preparation for our salad garden project...group 1 experienced rain so we looked at the vegetable planners and plotted which seeds to sow...
