A belated Happy New Year to any reader! Forgive our tardiness for the late greeting but after the Christmas frenzy, we’ve been busy organising ourselves for another season and another term. We welcome back our foundation students who will be getting stuck into the salad garden project from now until they leave in June so we look forward to their progress and will of course be keeping it posted here on the blog – hopefully in a more regular fashion than last year.
Many of our tasks at present include a lot of ground preparation ready for spring planting of potatoes, onion sets, parsnips and carrots. The land here at Bawdsey is keen to accommodate thistles and nettles and grass is quick to creep through the rabbit fence in an attempt to re-establish itself, so hand weeding the fence line is essential while we have the time to do it. Renovating the edges of grass paths, which divide the garden into the 16 plots is no small feat and have to be cut and removed by hand. It is a laborious task but can make a huge difference to the appearance of the garden, which is expected to have aesthetic as well as productive appeal. Some digging is required in small areas such as plot 16, amongst herbs and flowers and plot 12 between the fruit bushes, but fortunately for us the rotavator will be making a regular appearance to cultivate large areas more quickly. We also hope to make a start on the construction of our new compost bins so we can recycle the vegetative waste from the garden more effectively this year.
If that wasn’t enough, we continue to keep a vigilant eye on those pesky rabbits and moles (who can so easily undo all our hard work) and there is always something in need of maintenance or repair if the rain keeps us indoors!
