soil analysis development

Today we worked on developing the soil analysis. They used buckets and trowels and wore wellies and gloves. Bill took samples from the student salad garden, Jenny dug from the centre of the main garden, Chan took his from down by the pond (bit smelly) and Soroush got his from in front of the Manor.
We want to know what the difference will be between the soil samples from the organic gardens, and from other areas of the school that are not certified organic.

It was a beautiful sunny day and the view was breathtaking. We saw lots of snowdrops down by the pond, and worms in the soil. Chan likes the worms.

We then took the samples up to the potting shed and did the hand test. We found three of the samples to be fairly light, sandy soil, but Chan's felt much more like clay, and he could roll it into a ball. Not surprising as it came from by the pond.

We laid out the samples on foil on trays, labelled them and laid them out in the greenhouse to dry in the sun- ready for testing with the kits on Monday.

Have a look at the photos of what we did.
